Reflecting upon “Dies Domine”
Apostolic Letter of Pope John Paul II

“The duty to keep Sunday holy is easily understood if we consider the many different aspects of this day including the way God saw all he had made, found it very god, and rested.” (Dies Domine DD 7 and 8)

Pope John Paul urged us many times: “Do not be afraid. Open wide the doors to Christ.” So now the Church (and especially Pope Benedict) is urging us to rediscover Sunday. Do not be afraid to spend Sunday well. Remember the time we give to God is never time lost or wasted: It is time well spent. To understand Sunday we must re-read the story of creation and discover its theology of the Sabbath.

For Reflection This Week:

  • What does it mean to you personally that we are created with an in-built need for a day of rest?
  • Do you yearn to have some off-time from time itself?
